In a presentation based on his book, Wild Bears of Canada , wildlife guide and photographer Edward Savage will share some of his observations about grizzlies, black bears, and polar bears. Savage will be speaking at 7:00 PM on Tuesday, December 1, in the Courtenay and District Museum. Edward Savage has spent fifteen years watching bears across some of the country’s most remote terrain— and for many of the bears in this book, that relationship spans over a decade. That depth of observation is evident on every page of his book: how grizzly mothers raise and wean their young, what dangers imperil black bears, and how polar bears locate each other across the sea ice. Savage’s photographs and reflections explore the many traits of bears that we as humans value and connect with, from the profound mother-cub bonds to the strength and calm they exude in daily life. Copies of Wild Bears of Canada (Harbour Publishing) will be available for purchase ($49.95 plus tax) and signing after the talk. Edward Savage has led nature-based expeditions across Canada and internationally—wading rivers, kayaking remote coastlines, crossing the sub-arctic tundra—and has lectured widely on bear behaviour and ecology. Admission to the lecture is $5 per historical society member; $6 for non-members. Advance tickets are strongly recommended . Doors open 6:30 PM. Walt Disney had a lifelong passion for pairing classical pieces with animation to make orchestral music fun and accessible to all ages. The Strathcona Symphony Orchestra (SSO) is excited to present “From Fantasia to Frozen: Celebrating Walt Disney’s 125th Birthday,” featuring excerpts from his iconic cinematic masterpiece, Fantasia, and compositions from Disney movie favourites such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, Frozen, and The Little Mermaid. If you are dreaming of sugar plum fairies dancing in your head (Tchaikovsky’s The Nutcracker), wishing you were walking through a pastoral setting (Beethoven’s first movement, Symphony No. 6), musing about elegant ballroom dancing (Beauty and the Beast), or imagining an icy winter journey (Frozen), treat yourself and your family and come to the SSO’s winter concert! Performances will be at Courtenay’s Filberg Centre on Anderton Avenue, Saturday, December 12th and Sunday, December 13th.
