Lovingly built over the last 20 years, these gardens showcase medicinal plants both native and exotic. Each walk is an hour, covering a specific feature or area of the gardens, describing what you see and why these particular plants matter. In this hands-on-class, you’ll learn how to create, blend, shape, and roll herbal incense cones – an art that has been used for centuries in ritual, ceremony, relaxation, and purification throughout the world for centuries. We’ll explore a variety of aromatic herbs and resins, uncover their therapeutic actions, and discuss different natural binders. You’ll also learn practical tips for successfully combining, drying and storing your incense at home. Best of all, you’ll get your hand dirty creating your own custom incense cones to take home and enjoy!

Cumberland’s Pie of the Year Contest! Coming up at the Foggy Mountain Fall Fair Sunday September 20th! Get out your pie plates, pull our grandma’s recipe book and start peeling apples…. Register in advance $10 fee at: https://form.jotform.com/Cumberland_Forest_/poty2026 JUDGING PROCESS: All Foggy Mountain Fall Fair attendees can vote (1st 2nd and 3rd choice) for the “People’s Choice” pie between 1 and 3:00 pm in Buchanan Hall. This will be based on the appearance of the pie and the creativity and attractiveness of the display. decoration of your display space is a key part of the competition. Go wild! Go weird! The Top 4 Pies from People’s Choice and the Top 4 Pies visually selected by the Judges will move on to Final Judging Event at 4:00 pm. These 8 Pies will be judged by a special celebrity panel on Overall Appearance, Crust (form and taste), and Filling (form and taste). Audience members will also have opportunities to taste the pies! Awards will be presented after the judge’s vote followed by a pie of the year party with pie songs AND a lively auction of all the pies. Proceeds support the Cumberland Community Forest Society stewardship nd restoration projects. RULES: Entrants must provide TWO fresh baked fruit, sweet vegetable, or nut pies per entry Provide 2 copies of the pastry and filling recipe Pie Display (2 feet wide)) set up is – 12:00 -1 in Buchanan Hall Tables and linens will be supplied. Have SO MUCH FUN with your set up! The Primary FILLING ingredient should be made from an ingredient that can be grown in British Columbia. For example: Apple, stone fruit, cherry, rhubarb, berry, walnut etc. Examples of acceptable non-local secondary ingredients: Lemon in an apple pie, Ginger in a pear pie. BRING YOUR OWN PIE SERVER and NOTE: one pie is auctioned so the pie plate is a give away If your pie has any dairy ingredients, you must display on ice or cool packs as per food-safe standards.

Vanier Nature Park: Restoration and Renewal

Tucked within Vanier Nature Park is a small but remarkable grove of Garry oak trees, growing at the northern edge of their natural range. These trees are remnants of a culturally modified ecosystem that once covered an estimated 160 square kilometres of the Comox Valley. Join Karen Cummins and Eloise Holland of Comox Valley Nature, project coordinators for the restoration of this special site, for a walk exploring the history and evolution of the Garry oak ecosystem and the work underway to help it thrive. Along the way, discover how invasive plants are being removed to restore light around the oaks, and learn about new approaches being used to improve soil health and encourage greater native plant diversity. This is a chance to see ecological restoration in action and learn about the ongoing efforts to protect one of the Comox Valley’s unique and increasingly rare ecosystems. The Vanier Nature Park project is co-managed by Comox Valley Nature and the City of Courtenay, with funding from BC Nature, the City of Courtenay, and the Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation. This 4 day interdisciplinary celebration of fungus and forest ecology includes presentations, knowledge sharing, guided walks, art projects, storytelling, films, kids activities, and more! Thursday Night Science Pub, Friday Night Fungus Bazaar Art Night, Craft Market, Saturday Night Forest Walks and so much more. Join knowledge holders from the local community and from across the Salish Sea Region for this full emmersion into the fantastic world of fungi. Early Bird Fungus Fest Passes are on sale now for $45.
