World Community

A Comox Valley nonprofit (established 1990) focused on raising awareness about social, economic, and environmental justice, both locally and globally. They’re advocates working to connect what happens here with what’s happening around the world.
Their main activities are film screenings and fair trade sales. The annual Film Festival runs in February at the Sid Williams Theatre, featuring social justice documentaries from around the world. Throughout the year, they host a Film Series with additional screenings, often at North Island College’s Stan Hagen Theatre. Films cover topics like climate change, human rights, global conflicts, and sustainable development. Many screenings are admission by donation.
World Community was one of the early pioneers of fair trade coffee in the valley. They import and sell fairly traded coffee and tea (including organic tea from Assam, India through a partnership with Fertile Ground). Proceeds support primary health care promoters in Nicaragua and local organizations like the Comox Valley Transition Society, Care-A-Van, and AIDS Vancouver Island.
If you’re interested in documentaries that tackle global issues, want to support fair trade, or are looking to connect with people who care about international justice and sustainability, this is the group doing that work locally.
